A course is a set of lessons that people work through at their own pace, with optional weekly office hours where they can meet you live. Learners enroll and move through the lessons, and they can earn a credential when your plan includes credentials. This guide covers the four steps of the course form and what you can do after you publish.
Who can do this: any account on any plan, and the owner, admins and moderators of a community. Members-only access, subscriptions and tickets need a Honey Bee or higher plan; Worker Bee courses are public. Metaverse office hours need Honey Bee or higher.
#Start a new course
My HiveMy DashboardCoursesNew CourseOpen the dashboard of the account that should publish the course, then select New Course on the Courses tab. For a community, open its dashboard first.
The form is titled Create New Course. The panel on the right shows the four steps, a preview card, a Drafts menu and the Back and Next buttons. Your progress is saved automatically as a draft, and Cancel offers Discard draft, Keep editing and Save & exit.
#Basic Info

Required. Up to 60 characters.
Write the Short Description
Required. Up to 125 characters. It appears on course cards.
Choose the Course Difficulty
Required. Select Beginner (no prior knowledge required), Intermediate (some experience helpful) or Advanced (strong background needed).
Set a start and end date, if you want one
Optional. Select Set a start and end date, then click the first and last day on the calendar. Select No end date / continuous course if the course has a start but no end. Leave the whole section off for a course that is always open.
Write the Full Description
Required. Use the editor, up to 3,000 words, or select Upload Document and choose a PDF or Markdown file.
Choose badges and add instructors
Pick up to 5 badges. For a community you can also search for people under Instructors and add them. Instructors are listed on the course.
If your plan includes credentials you also see a Credential image field. Hive3 generates a badge from the course name unless you upload your own square image (400 × 400 pixels recommended).
#Office Hours
Office hours are a regular live session for your learners. Choose one of three options.
| Option | What it means |
|---|---|
| No office hours | A self-paced course. |
| Virtual office hours | Hosted with a video link. |
| Metaverse office hours | Hosted in a 3D world. |
Add the link, for virtual office hours
Enter the Office Hours Link, for example a Zoom meeting. It is required and must be a safe web address.
Choose a world, for metaverse office hours
Under Choose a world, select the world. Hive3 fills in the maximum for you: Maximum participants is required for a world, up to 500 in a shared world and up to 100 in a Royal Hive world. For a virtual session it is optional and can stay unlimited.
Set the weekly schedule
Under Office hours schedule, choose a Timezone, select the days of the week (Sun to Sat), then set a Start time and an End time. The end must be later than the start.
Hive3 turns your schedule into sessions that learners can attend. Metaverse sessions in a shared world use your metaverse time in the same way events do.
#Lessons
A course needs at least one lesson before you can continue.
Start a lesson
Select New Lesson, or Create First Lesson if the list is empty. The form is titled Create New Lesson.
Name it and add an overview
Enter the Lesson Title (required). The Lesson Overview is optional. It uses the same editor as the course description, and you can upload a PDF or Markdown file instead.
Add sections
Select New Section and give it a title. A lesson is made of one or more sections.
Choose the section type
Text / PDF lets you write the section in the editor or upload a document. Video asks for a Video URL (a YouTube or Vimeo link) or an uploaded file with Upload Video. A video section needs one or the other. You can add Notes / Transcript beneath the video.
Save the lesson
Select Add Lesson. When you edit an existing lesson the button reads Update Lesson. You cannot save a lesson without a title.
Back in the lesson list, each lesson shows its sections. Use the arrows to move a lesson up or down, edit it, or delete it. To remove one section, use the trash icon on its row and confirm.
#Course Access
Choose the Enrollment Type
Auto-enroll participants lets learners enroll directly. Apply for enrollment makes them apply and wait for your approval.
Choose who can see and enroll
Open enrollment is for anyone. Members only limits the course to members or collaborators. Subscription / ticket requires a subscription or lets people buy a one-time ticket. Worker Bee accounts see only the open option.
Set up payment, for paid courses
Connect Stripe for subscriptions and PayPal for one-time tickets in Monetize. Then select a plan under Select subscription, or turn on Enable one-time ticket pricing in the One-Time Course Ticket section and enter a Price and Currency (USD, EUR or GBP). Owners and admins set prices. See Get paid.
#Publish
Select Create Course in the panel. Hive3 asks Ready to publish?. Choose Create Course to publish and open the course page, or Keep editing to go back.
#After you publish
Find the course on the Courses tab of your dashboard. Open More actions on its row.
#Approve enrollments
Manage Enrollment lists learners with tabs for All, Pending, Approved and Denied. With Apply for enrollment, select Approve or Deny on each request.
#See how learners are doing
View Analytics opens Course Analytics. It shows Total Enrolled, Completed with the completion rate, Avg Progress and In Progress. Below, every learner is listed with their progress percentage, the lessons they have completed out of the total, when they enrolled, when they were last active and whether they have finished. Filter the list with All, In Progress and Completed.
#Edit, hide or delete
Edit reopens the form as Edit Course and the last button reads Update Course. Hide from profile keeps the course but removes it from your public lists; a course with an end date can be hidden once that date has passed.
#Tips
- Write the short description for someone deciding whether to enroll. The full description can then go into detail.
- Break long topics into several lessons with short sections, so learners can see their progress.
- Use Apply for enrollment if you want to teach a small group.
- A video section is not complete without a link or an upload, so add that before you save the lesson.
