Create a quest

Set a challenge with objectives, run it for 7 or 30 days, and review the evidence people submit.

A quest is a time-limited challenge made of objectives, such as completing a course, attending an event or submitting proof of something you asked for. People enroll, work through the objectives and can earn a credential when they finish. Each quest uses one quest credit.

Who can do this: any account on any plan, and the owner, admins and moderators of a community. You need a quest credit available: Swarm and Royal Hive include some every month, and any account can buy more. Owners and admins buy credits. Moderators spend the credits already in the balance. Members-only access, subscriptions and tickets need a Honey Bee or higher plan.

#Understand quest credits

Quest credits come in two lengths.

CreditLongest questIncluded each month
7-day7 daysSwarm: 1. Royal Hive: 2.
30-day30 daysSwarm: 1. Royal Hive: 2.

Included credits expire at the end of each month. When you publish a quest, Hive3 uses an included credit first and then the oldest credit you bought. You can see your balance in the Quest credits panel on your dashboard, which shows 7 day, 30 day and how many active quests you have. Prices and packs are on Plans and pricing.

#Start a new quest

My HiveMy DashboardQuestsNew Quest

Open the dashboard of the account that should publish the quest, and select New Quest on the Quests tab. For a community, open its dashboard first.

  1. Choose a credit

A Create Quest window asks which duration credit to use. Select 7 day quest (uses a Single plan credit) or 30 day quest (uses a Bundle plan credit). Each option shows how many credits are remaining, and options with none left are disabled.

  2. Buy more if you need to

Owners and admins can select Buy additional quest credits in the same window. If you have no credits at all, Hive3 opens Buy Quest Credits straight away. A moderator sees Out of quest credits. Ask an admin to buy more.

The form is titled Create Quest and has four steps: Basic Info, Quest Schedule, Quest Builder and Visibility & Access. Your progress is saved automatically as a draft. Use the Drafts menu to resume one.

#Basic Info

  1. Add a Quest Banner

    Optional. 1200 × 400 pixels is recommended.

  2. Write the Quest Title

    Required. Up to 60 characters.

  3. Write the Short Description

    Required. Up to 125 characters.

  4. Write the Full Description

Required. Use the editor, up to 3,000 words, or upload a PDF or Markdown file with Upload Document.

  5. Choose badges

Up to 5. If your plan includes credentials, you can also set the Credential image for the credential people earn by completing the quest.

#Quest Schedule

  1. Pick the dates

Click the first day on the calendar, then the last day. You can also type the Start and Stop date and time. The start cannot be in the past.

  2. Check the length

Hive3 fills in the longest end date your credit allows, 7 or 30 days after the start. You can end the quest sooner. A longer end is blocked with Maximum 7 days for this quest's credit plan (or 30).

  3. Set the time zone

Use the menu next to TZ. A summary confirms This quest will run from the start to the end and how many days that is.

#Quest Builder

The builder defines what people must do.

#Choose a quest mode

Under Quest Mode, select:

  • Standard Quest: one or more objectives that people complete at their own pace.
  • Streak Quest: people complete the objectives on consecutive days. Set the Streak Duration (days) from 1 to 30.

#Add objectives

A quest needs at least one objective.

  1. Start an objective

    Select New Objective.

  2. Choose the action

Under What do you want the questers to do?, choose one of the actions in the table below.

  3. Set the details

Add a Short Description, then set how many times: How many times should they do this?. For Make progress on a course you set a percentage instead, between 1 and 100.

  4. Choose whose activity counts

Under Target accounts, your own account is selected by default. Select Add account to count activity from other accounts as well, up to 10.

  5. Narrow it to one item, if you like

For course, event and job actions you can choose a specific course, event or job (the field is optional) or leave it open to any in scope.

  6. Save the objective

Select Add Objective, or Update Objective when editing. Use Change to pick a different action.

#Create a custom task

Choose Custom task when none of the built-in actions fit.

  1. Name the task

Enter an Objective name, up to 120 characters, for example "Share your project on LinkedIn". It is required.

  2. Describe it

Under What do you want the quester to do?, write the instructions. They are required and can include images.

  3. Choose the Evidence Type

Written response (the default) asks for text, Link submission asks for a link, and Document upload asks for a file.

A custom task.

#Visibility & Access

This step is titled Quest Access.

  1. Choose the Enrollment Type

Auto-enroll participants lets people join directly. Apply for entry leaves enrollment pending until an owner or admin approves it.

  2. Choose the visibility

Public, Members only or Subscription / ticket. Worker Bee accounts see only Public.

  3. Set up payment, if needed

For subscriptions, connect Stripe. For a one-time ticket, connect PayPal, then turn on Enable one-time ticket pricing in the One-Time Quest Ticket section and enter a Price and Currency. See Get paid.

#Publish

Select Create Quest. Hive3 asks Ready to publish?. Choose Create Quest to confirm. This is the moment the credit is used.

#After you publish

On the Quests tab of your dashboard, open More actions on the quest and select Manage Enrollment. The page is titled Quest Enrollments.

  1. Approve people

Enrollment Requests lists each participant with their status, progress and when they applied. For pending requests, select Approve or Decline.

  2. Open their evidence

Select Review on a row. The Evidence Review panel shows each submission against its objective: the written response, the link, documents and images.

  3. Approve or deny each submission

Select Approve to count the objective as done, or Deny to reject it. The quester is notified either way. Once all of a participant's objectives are done, they complete the quest and can earn its credential if there is one.

Quest enrollments and evidence review.

Built-in actions, such as completing a course, are tracked automatically, so only custom tasks need your review.

#Quests lock when they start

Once a quest starts you can no longer edit or delete it. Ended quests are read-only. You can hide an ended quest from your profile with Hide from profile.

#Tips

  • Pick the shorter credit when you can. A 7-day quest keeps people focused.
  • Mix one automatic objective with one custom task so people have a quick way to start and something to show.
  • Write custom instructions as if the quester will read them once. Say exactly what to submit.
  • Use a streak quest for habits, such as logging in or posting each day for a week.
